	Larry fragt: I have applied for Permanent Diaconate here in the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Following interviews & being turned away last year, I received a confirmation letter to be a participant in the Aspirancy Phase of Diaconal Formation Program 2003. I attended a four day silent retreat last weekend, and received the most positive form of being where I need to be for this vocation, being at peace with myself over the six year committment, as well as my wife's blessing and the ability through Ignatius' contemplative prayer exercises to be there in the scene with Jesus teaching and ministering to the crowds. Can you please confirm whether this is truly a positive confirmation for my vocation and change in life style? Shalom
	Dear Larry, The real confirmation of a vocation does not reside in us, but rather in the Church through her representatives. If you are open and sincere with the representatives of the Archbishop, and if he through them accepts you into the program you can take that to be a sign that you are called. The sense of being called moves us to place ourselves at the disposition of the Church, but the true sign that it is God and not us speaking is the Church's acceptance of us as candidates, and then its call at the time of ordination. Something else, I suppose the six-year commitment you refer to means the preparation course for the diaconate. Remember the commitment to the diaconate itself is life-long. God bless.
